Do Cats Get Lyme Disease?

Do cats get Lyme Disease?

We get this question often. According to experts, cats do not have any clinical signs with Lyme. This is great news for our feline friends, but the ticks that cause Lyme Disease can fall off your cat and on to you. Lyme disease is concentrated in the Northeastern United States from Virginia to Maine.  To see a prevalence map please click here.

Cat in general are more resistant to tick borne diseases than humans or dogs, but there are other tick borne diseases that cats can get -Babesiosis, Cytauzoonosis and Erhlichiosis .

So how can you protect your cat and your family?  Currently the most economical and effective preventative is a Seresto collar. The collar is effective for 8 months and also kills and repels fleas.

Fipronil the active ingredient in Frontline and Easy Spot also kills ticks and fleas.  Unfortunately, it takes hours for the fipronil to work against ticks.  In my opinion, a Seresto collar is going to be more effective against ticks and more economical.

Be sure to ask your veterinarian for help. Many tick products that are labeled for other species can be toxic to cats.
